SAVING SPARROWS – A SMALL BIRD WITH A BIG MESSAGE

Once a familiar sight in our backyards, balconies, and rooftops, the cheerful chirping of sparrows is now fading from our daily lives. These tiny birds, once abundant in both rural and urban landscapes, are slowly disappearing due to rapid urbanization, loss of habitat, and lack of awareness. Saving sparrows is not just about protecting a bird—it's about preserving the balance of our ecosystem and reconnecting with nature.

Why Are Sparrows Disappearing?

With the rise of concrete buildings, radiation from mobile towers, air and noise pollution, and the decline of green spaces, sparrows are struggling to find shelter, food, and nesting areas. Traditional tiled roofs and small holes in old houses used to provide ideal homes for sparrows. Today’s modern architecture leaves no space for these birds to thrive.

 How Can We Help?

Saving sparrows begins at home. Here are simple steps we can all take:

  • Install clay bird pots and wooden nest boxes in balconies, gardens, or school campuses.
  • Place small bowls of water and grains (like millet, rice, or bajra) daily to provide food and hydration.
  • Avoid chemical pesticides in gardens and farmlands to keep the food chain safe for birds.
  • Spread awareness through school activities, eco-clubs, and social media to encourage more people to join the movement.
  • Involving the Young Generation

Institutions like SCAD Polytechnic College and schools can play a crucial role by involving students in bird-saving initiatives. Organizing “Save the Sparrow” drives, nest-making workshops, and nature walks can foster empathy and responsibility among the youth towards our environment.

Let’s not wait until the sparrow becomes just a memory in textbooks. Each small effort counts. Together, we can bring back the chirp of sparrows and celebrate the beauty of living in harmony with nature.
